In my previous blog post, I wrote about how dreams are powerful, because they give us the motivation to keep moving forward, even when life throws us a curveball.
I have witnessed how the opinions of others can discourage individuals from chasing their dreams, but I have also been a victim of other people’s opinions, too. I have been underestimated my entire life. Being told that I couldn’t do certain things because of my different ability was the most degrading feeling in the world. However, there have also been instances where the opinions and misconceptions of others have ignited and fueled a fire deep inside of me to go forth and accomplish my goals, despite what others may think. My friend, Ashton sums it up perfectly. She always says, “just because we have a disability does not mean that we cannot do what we want. It just means that we may have to do it in a different way.”
The truth is, everyone has disabilities- some of them are visible and some are internal. It is human nature to look in the mirror and focus solely on what we do not like about ourselves. Maybe you do not like your hair, your figure or the bags underneath your eyes. Maybe you are struggling with how you feel on the inside. I want to tell you that those things are not flaws or imperfections. Those things are part of what makes you- YOU! You are perfect just the way you are. It took me a long time to realize that my disability is part of what makes me, Becca. I would be lying if I said that having Cerebral Palsy does not suck sometimes, but I have learned so many valuable lessons as a result. The opinions of others are invalid. If you believe in yourself, anything is possible!
