Don't Bubble Wrap Me!

They say there is a first time for everything. Well, this weekend was full of firsts, and I must say that I enjoyed every minute of it. Earlier this year, I was nominated to sit on the provincial board for the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiing. I accepted this position without hesitation, because the program holds a special place in my heart, as it has gifted me with the chance to learn how to sit ski, but also restore a sense of self confidence that was absent for a long time. Getting involved with the board has in a small way, allowed me to give back a portion of what CADS has given me.

The board meeting was held in Edmonton, which meant that this would be the first weekend that I have done completely independently without help from my friends and family- a huge accomplishment for me. I also stayed in a hotel room and flew home for the first time, EVER!!!

There have been few times in my life where I have felt this free. It has left me wanting to experience more, but whether this is a good thing or a bad thing has not yet been determined, given my sense of adventure.

I had the pleasure of driving up with the president of the board, Ed, and one of my fellow board members named, Peter both of whom live with different abilities as well. They have the most refreshing attitudes of anyone I have ever met not to mention a self deprecating sense of humor like none other. We were like the Three Stooges!

On the car ride, Ed said something that I will never forget. “ I am allergic to bubble wrap.”  This statement could not be more true. Seeing all that others have accomplished has reinforced  the importance of living life as if our challenges are non existent, because if I don’t, I will miss out on opportunities such as this one.
